Timing Set Install: Degreeing Cams for Locked Valve Events

Install timing sets and degree cams via intake centerline to hit manufacturer valve events on circle track and drag race engines.

Updated 2026-08-25

Skip lining up timing marks on race builds. Degreeing the cam locks valve events exactly where the manufacturer dyno-tested them, pulling hidden power and extending durability under red-flag conditions.

Prep starts with a clean short block on the stand. Locate true TDC on number one using a dial indicator or piston stop, then zero the degree wheel pointer. Heads-on or heads-off works, but heads-off speeds the process on asphalt-prep days.

Mount the dial indicator on the number one intake lifter. Rotate the crank clockwise to max lift, zero the gauge, then roll counterclockwise to .050-inch drop and record the reading. Continue clockwise past zero to the next .050-inch drop and average the two numbers for intake centerline.

Compare the calculated centerline to the spec card supplied with the cam. Adjust the timing set offset bushings or keyway until it matches. This discipline prevents the power loss that comes from even a few degrees of error on high-load circle track or drag passes.

Re-check after final torquing the cam gear and verify no movement under rotation. Consistent timing set install keeps the valvetrain in the intended LSA and duration window for repeatable lap times or elapsed times.
