Timing Set Install and Cam Degreeing for Circle Track Race Engines

Race-day reds and carbon accents frame the short block on the stand. Skipping timing gear marks for a degreed cam leaves power on the asphalt and risks valvetrain durability under sustained circle track loads.

Install the timing set with the crank key at TDC on number one. Verify the cam sprocket dots align only after the chain is tensioned; never trust factory marks alone on a race engine.

Follow the intake centerline method from the cam spec card. Locate true TDC, mount the degree wheel, then record the two .050-inch points on either side of max lift and divide by two to confirm the target centerline.

Heads on or off, the process confirms the cam manufacturer’s dyno-optimized events. This step directly improves power delivery and long-term reliability when the engine sees repeated high-RPM laps.

Document every reading and re-check after final torquing. Any deviation means pulling the set and adjusting with offset bushings or keys before the engine leaves the shop.
