Pick converter diameter first to set your stall window on the drag strip. Larger diameters like 13-inch units hold 5 quarts and typically deliver lower stall for heavy cars, while 8-inch converters take only 2 quarts and push stall higher for lighter chassis.
Cross-reference transmission capacity next. A TH400 with stock pan needs 6 quarts total, so add the converter fill after the trans is charged to avoid over or under fill that shifts stall on the line.
Always pre-fill a fresh converter before install per ATI charts. An 11-inch unit takes 3.5 quarts; skipping this step leaves air pockets that raise stall unpredictably during first passes.
Downsize diameter when chasing higher stall. Dropping from 10-inch (3 quarts) to 9-inch (2.5 quarts) tightens the stall band for quicker spool on nitrous or blown combos without touching the trans valve body.
Verify final level after heat cycles. Deep aftermarket pans add volume, so recheck against the base charts and top off to keep stall consistent across rounds.
