Header primaries control exhaust velocity to match engine rpm range. Smaller diameters keep gas speed high for strong low-end pull while larger tubes reduce backpressure at peak revs.
Drag racing favors bigger primaries. High-rpm launches and long-duration cams need the lower velocity to clear spent gases fast once the engine is on the pipe.
Circle track apps run smaller primaries. Consistent mid-range torque and quick throttle response reward the higher velocity that builds pull out of corners.
Four-into-one collectors suit most drag setups because they tolerate length variations and deliver clean top-end scavenging. 180-degree designs create even pulses every crank rotation for oval-track stability.
Street engines with stock compression lose low-rpm efficiency on oversized tubes. Race builds with high compression and long cams gain from the larger sizes only when rpm stays elevated.
