High torque in 4x4 trucks breaks the oil wedge fast when the crank journal loads the bearing shell under acceleration or climb. Proper clearance and oil volume keep the wedge intact so the babbitt layer survives repeated hits.
Check bearing clearance against the journal before final assembly. Over-clearance lets the wedge collapse; too tight starves the surface when the rod big end distorts under detonation or overload.
