Drag Strip Stall Basics: Diameter and Fluid Fill for Launch Grip
Match converter diameter and fluid volume to target stall for consistent drag strip launches using ATI capacity data.
Updated 2026-09-22
Drag strip launches live or die by stall speed. Converter diameter sets the baseline stall range while fluid fill fine-tunes the final number before the green light.
ATI charts list exact fluid volumes by diameter: 13-inch units take 5 quarts, 12-inch 4 quarts, 11-inch 3.5 quarts, and 10-inch 3 quarts. Always fill a fresh converter before install.
Smaller diameters raise stall for quicker spool on light cars. Larger diameters lower stall for heavy chassis or high-torque combos that need more lock-up under the stripe.
Match the transmission first. TH400 with stock pan holds 6 quarts while Powerglide holds 4; add converter volume and verify total on the dipstick after the first heat cycle.
Deep aftermarket pans increase capacity. Recheck level hot, engine running, in park, then log 60-foot times to confirm the stall target is hitting the powerband.
