Carburetor Sizing Basics for Street and Race
How to rough-size a carb for CFM, engine size, and rpm without guessing yourself into a lean stumble.

CFM demand is roughly engine size × max rpm × volumetric efficiency ÷ 3456. Street engines often live near 80–85% VE; race combos can push higher. Manufacturer tech libraries (Holley, Edelbrock) publish similar sizing relationships for induction selection.
Too small starves the top end. Too large hurts throttle response and atomization at part throttle. Match the carb to the powerband you actually race or drive in — not a brochure number alone.
