Cam Degreeing: Intake Centerline Discipline for Race Builds

Dial precise valve events with intake centerline method to unlock power and durability on dirt late models and sprint cars.

Skip the dot-to-dot timing marks on race day. Degreeing the cam locks every valve event exactly where the grinder intended, squeezing extra horsepower while protecting valvetrain life under sustained load.

Manufacturers like Comp and Lunati dyno each grind for specific RPM bands and applications. Lining up gears alone leaves that work on the table and risks piston-to-valve contact when the revs climb.

Work with the short block on an engine stand and heads off for easiest access. Set number-one at true TDC, zero the degree wheel, then mount a dial indicator on the number-one intake lifter.

Rotate clockwise to max lift, zero the indicator, then roll counterclockwise to .050-inch drop and note the reading. Roll past TDC to the next .050-inch point on the rise, average the two numbers, and compare to the cam card centerline spec.

Adjust the timing set as needed until the measured centerline matches the card. Recheck after final torque to confirm nothing shifted during the process.
