Race engine builds demand exact cam timing. Simply aligning timing gear marks skips the manufacturer’s optimized valve events and leaves power untapped. Proper timing set install followed by degreeing ensures the cam sits where Comp, Isky, Lunati or Cam Motion intended for the application and RPM range.

Begin with a verified TDC on number one using a degree wheel and pointer. Mount the dial indicator on the number one intake lifter. Rotate the crank to maximum lift, zero the indicator, then record the wheel readings at the .050-inch drop points on either side. Average those two numbers to confirm the intake centerline matches the spec card.

Timing set install discipline comes first. Verify the crank and cam sprockets seat fully, chain tension is correct, and no runout exists before any degreeing begins. Heads-on or heads-off both work, yet short-block-on-stand setups speed the process and reduce error.

Record every step. If the measured centerline deviates, adjust with offset bushings or advance/retard keys until it lands on target. This single check protects valvetrain reliability and keeps combustion events consistent under race loads.
