Race engines reward builders who treat cam degreeing as non-negotiable pit-lane discipline. Lining up timing marks alone leaves horsepower and durability on the table. Proper degreeing places the cam exactly where the manufacturer dyno-tested it for your application.

Cam makers like Comp and Lunati optimize valve events on the dyno for specific RPM ranges and powerbands. Degreeing confirms those events occur as intended. The payoff shows up in stronger mid-range pull and longer valvetrain life under race loads.

Use the intake centerline method on the spec card. Find TDC on number one, zero the degree wheel. Mount a dial indicator on the intake lifter, rotate to max lift, zero the gauge. Roll past .050-inch drop on both sides of peak, average the readings, and compare to the card target.

Install the timing set with the same focus. Verify the cam gear sits square, chain tension is correct, and the degree wheel still reads true after torquing. Any shift here undoes the degreeing work before the engine ever fires.

Heads on or off, the short block on a stand makes the job faster and repeatable. In-chassis degreeing works but adds time and risk of missed readings. Always recheck after final timing set torquing and before buttoning up the front cover.
