Cam Degreeing Discipline for Drag Race Engine Builds

Install timing sets and degree cams precisely to lock in valve events and pull every horsepower from race engines.

Race-day reds flash across the shop floor as builders chase every degree of cam timing. Lining up gear marks alone leaves power on the table and risks durability under nitrous or boost loads.

Cam makers like Comp and Lunati dial valve events on the dyno for specific RPM bands. Degreeing the cam ensures the intake centerline lands exactly where the spec card demands instead of guessing at assembly.

Set number-one at true TDC on the degree wheel. Mount the dial indicator on the intake lifter, zero at peak lift, then roll the crank to capture the .050-inch points on either side of centerline. Average the readings and compare to the card.

Adjust the timing set with offset bushings or multi-key crank gears until the measured centerline matches the target. Heads-on or heads-off works, though the short block on a stand speeds the process without fighting valve springs.

Verify every step against the manufacturer sheet before final torque on the cam bolts. Proper degreeing sharpens throttle response, protects piston-to-valve clearance, and keeps the valvetrain alive through repeated high-RPM passes.
